State of the Dutch Ether in 2016: up to 3 Gbit/s wireless capacity per square kilometre

27-10-2016

On June 15, the Dutch Radiocommunications Agency has published their annual ‘State of the Ether’ report for 2015. The report provides an overview of the Dutch wireless spectrum usage and trends.

Especially interesting is this page, which provides insight in the total capacity of Dutch mobile networks. These pictures are calculated by the Agency based on antenna registration data, using a model developed by me and my colleagues at Dialogic and Inwilution.

As of January 1, 2016, the total capacity of mobile networks in the Netherlands appears to exceed 3 Gbit/s/km2 in certain locations, which is truly amazing. The fact that there are also places that have only between 0.3 – 15 Mbit/s/km2 is a bit worrying though.
